Rails Published July 22, 2005

I’ve been spending a lot of time with Ruby on Rails and I love it. I love it so much that I hate ASP and PHP more than anything. Rails takes all of the crap about programming that I hate and gets rid of all of it. It lets me avoid doing all of the database-to-form mapping and validation stuff that I hate and instead lets me focus on the presentation and design of the site.

From Mom Published July 22, 2005

Mom says: I’m going for the bone marrow transplant after all. I keep hearing all these success stories and I figure I’m too young to give up. I just have to recover my normal blood counts and that won’t happen ’til at least August. In the meanwhile, I get platelet transfusions and shots that produce white blood and red blood cells I completely support her decision, but I am really worried.

History of the Laugh Track Published July 16, 2005

Much of the “canned laughter” used on the soundtracks of sitcoms is said to have come from tapes that were originally recorded during broadcasts of “The Red Skelton Show” in the late 1950s and early ’60s. It is eerie to realize that when we encounter a laugh track (or “sweetening”) in a recent show, some of the people we hear laughing may have been dead for decades. Yet their guffaws go on forever.

Mmmmmm… recirculated air Published July 6, 2005

The AC is in, and the house is much more comfortable. I slept great last night, so great that I didn’t even want to wake up. I had to take the morning off because the electricians had some more work to do and I wanted to be there when the big stuff was going on. I left them to their work about 11:30 or so, and I guess we’ll see how much of my house is left when I get hom.

Raiden Published July 1, 2005

Raiden was one of my favorite platform space shooter games when I was a kid. Now, some enterprising Flash developors have made a wonderfully accurate (and great-looking) remake that you can play online. Play RaidenX

No AC yet Published July 1, 2005

I was all ready to have my AC installed today, but because of the storm, XCEL Energy (the local energy concern) decided to cancel my service and inspection. The electricians need to have the power company come out and shut things off for them so they can work, and all of the crews are out of town working to restore power to other people’s homes. But screw them… I’m hot!

Burning The Candle Published June 29, 2005

It’s late and I should be sleeping. It’s cooler in the house than it’s been the last few days, but I am still sweating a bit. I’m tired because I’ve been working on very little sleep; the weather has been making it difficult to get comfortable. I’m trying to finish up the rnr site this week and I’m working on a very frustrating project at the office as well. I’m looking forward to Thursday, when I will just be able to sit back and relax while the contractors install my new electrical and central air systems.

Using YUM to Update KDE on White Box Enterprise Linux 4 Published June 27, 2005

You must be Root to do this. You must also not be running KDE when you do this. At the graphical log-in screen, press CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to a prompt. Install YUM. If you don’t have this installed, place the 4th CD in the drive. Look for the file ‘yum-2.2.0-0.fc3.rpm’ and copy it to your home folder. Once copied, install it using the standard rmp -ivh ~/yum-2.2.0-0.fc3.rpm Add the repository to your /etc/yum.
