Setting up an IRC Client for the Office Hours Chat on Your Mac

Follow this guide to install Colloquy, a free IRC client, to connect to this chatroom instead of using the web interface. This will allow you to have logs of the chat and stay connected even when your browser is closed.

First, download Colloquy

Download Colloquy from http://colloquy.info/downloads.html.

Set Up Server

Install and run Colloquy. When you first launch the program, you'll be asked for your nickname and server.

  1. Enter your CVTC username as your nickname.
  2. Leave Server Protocol to the default value of IRC
  3. Enter chat.freenode.net for the Chat Server. You can type this or choose it from the dropdown.
  4. Check the option for Remember This Connection
  5. Press Connect

 

Ensure Automatic Connection

Press the Checkbox to the right of the server you just added to ensure it connects to the server each time you start Colloquy.

Add The Chat Room

Now you have to join the chat room.

  1. Press Join Room
  2. For the connection, make sure it says chat.freenode.net followed by your username
  3. For the chat room, enter ##bphogan_office_hours
  4. Press Join

 

Configure The Chatroom

Make a few changes to make your experience better.

  1. Press the arrow next to the channel name to see the members in the room
  2. Click the settings cog in the lower left corner of the window
  3. Choose Auto Join so you join this chat automatically when you launch Colloquy.

Talk With Others

You're all set. Communicate with others, ask questions, network, and help your fellow students.
